Island Games/Archery
ANOTHER bronze medal for the Island came in the archery.
Jennie Ham, in her third games, has picked up medals at the previous two and was desperately unlucky not to collect a silver in the FITA women's compound.
"I was just one arrow away from coming second," said Jennie, 56, from Cowes. "Only seven points separated me from the Shetland Island runner-up spot, although I was 34 behind the winner from the Faroes."
Andrea Beddard finished a creditable fifth with 1199.
Fifth spot was also where Alex Smith finished in the men's compound competition, with Fred Blackwell in 20th.
Blackwell's position could have been affected by the fact he came to the aid of a fellow competitor whose bow broke.
"We were halfway through the competition when I noticed a shooter was having trouble with his bow," said Blackwell, 64, from Cowes. "I managed to fix it for him but the judge was not very happy but, after all, these are supposed to be the friendly games and I was just doing my bit."
In the men's recurve, Trevor Cameron-Brown, appearing in his first Island Games, was 29th with a score of 901.

SWIMMING
ALTHOUGH the swim team have failed to pick up any medals so far, manager Paul Baldwin was not too despondent because they had appeared in more finals than they did in 2005 in the Shetlands.
"The standard has risen dramatically in the past two years," said Baldwin. "But my squad of Michael Alchin, Matt Gard, Mikael Popov, Dan Snellgrove, Andrew Teague, Sam Tinson-Wood, Louisa Critchley, Rosie Gard, Clare Grundy, Maria and Shannon Morris and Lauren Turner all performed superbly and many recorded personal best times.
"The experience for the younger swimmers will be invaluable and by Aland, in two years' time, they will be more mature and will be among the medals."
