LATE SURGE OF MEDALS FOR ISLAND
By John Hamon -

Island Games
WHILE the return of 13 medals may not seem a lot from the Island, all the sports men and women must be congratulated for putting in amazing performances.
In temperatures exceeding 50 degrees, how they competed in the first place was a miracle. It was hard enough finding shade as a reporter but for those athletes to stand, sometimes for hours on end like the golfers, and come back with any medal was a testimony to the dedication of them all.
Although the medal winners will grab the headlines, I think every one of them deserve a gold for being great ambassadors for the IW and pushing themselves to the absolute limit.
With two days to go, the Island’s tally was just five through Andy Frost, gold in the hammer competition with a new games’ record, and four bronze medals by the table tennis team of Roger Hookey, Alex Rorke, Julie Thorn and Karen King, Jennie Ham in archery, Jaryd Robinson in the 400m hurdles, and Richard Wilson and Bill Wyatt-Millington in the 50m prone smallbore rifle team.
On Thursday and Friday, the IW went medal-mad with a further eight secured. Golds went to Wilson, in the individual 50m smallbore rifle, Kim Murray, long jump, Amy Church, ladies’ hammer, Matt Barton, triple jump, and Richard and Andrew Talbot in the sailing team event.
Silvers followed for Andrew Talbot, Laser standard rig, and Mark Bell, golf, and Joe Wade, 1,500m, came third and collected a bronze.
