MORE than 1,600 children from across the country smothered Seaclose Park on Sunday for the Vectis mini-rugby festival.
Covering the whole of Seaclose plus Medina High School’s playing fields, hundreds of exciting games were played, from under-sevens to under-12s.
Teams only had a matter of minutes to win, making for good running rugby across the board.
The Island’s Vectis Rugby Club, which hosted the tournament, had teams at all levels.
The newly established under-eights had only played four competitive matches this season and, despite failing to win any of their games, enjoyed their day.
Meanwhile the under-nines won their first match in their pool, seven tries to one. But while they lost the rest of their pool games, they reached the quarter-finals of the plate competition. Here they lost to Dorking A team, three tries to nil.
The under-10s fielded two sides, the Pirates and the Buccaneers.
The Pirates swept through their pool with Danny Rackett scoring seven out of the 12 tries scored. Other tries were scored by Will Vaughan, Matthew Smith, Kyle Blair, Jake Matthews and Freddie Boyce.
After finishing top of their pool they faced Salisbury in the quarter final of the cup competition and lost one try to nil.
Buccaneers suffered heavy defeats in their pool games but seized the day in the semi-final of the bowl competition against Bracknell B. The teams drew one try each, but Vectis won on the toss of a coin and met Bechammians in the final. The opposition proved too strong, scoring twice to take the honours.
The under-11s came third in their pool after a win against Beckenham and losses to Alton and Bechammians. This secured a place in the quarter finals of the plate competition, where they lost by a single try to Dorking.
The under-12s reached the plate final, but were defeated.
Organiser Ollie Kearney thanked the sponsors who had helped make the day happen.
He added: “The festival this year was the biggest we have ever run as a club with over 1,600 children playing rugby aged between seven and 12. ”
