JONNY Malbon is making his solo sailing debut this season in the Artemis Transat next month, before tackling the Everest of solo ocean racing, the Vendee Globe.
The 33-year-old, from Cowes, cut his teeth preparing International 60ft Monohull Open Class Association racing yachts for some of Britain’s most famous solo sailors, most notably Dame Ellen MacArthur, and now takes to the stage himself to take on the best in the world.
The Artemis II skipper was joined by friends and family to launch and name the latest generation yacht at Ocean Village, in Southampton.
“It is a great day to see this beautiful craft in the water. There has been so much planning and development in the Artemis Ocean Racing project and I can’t wait to get out onto the seas and see what she is capable of,” he said.
The yacht takes to the water seven months ahead of the Vendee Globe.
An Artemis spokesman said: “This greyhound of the seas will provide the ideal platform to harness Jonny’s potential. He has been closely involved since inception.”
