RCYC SETS DATE FOR VICE ADMIRAL’S CUP

THE Royal Corinthian Yacht Club has confirmed it will hold this year’s Vice Admiral’s Cup regatta from June 2 to 4 inclusive.
As usual, the event will combine fast and furious short-course Solent racing with a great social programme hosted at the RCYC’s clubhouse.
The club expects around ten Swan 45s, considerably swelling the already popular 44-46ft class, which includes the Farr 45s and DK46s.
The Swan 45s have their world championships in Cowes this summer and will use this event to tune up. In addition to the 44-46ft class, there will also be a big-boat class for 50-52 footers, with a maximum IRC rating of 1.36.
Already four TP52s have indicated they will take part, which will be the first time this exciting new class will be seen as a fleet in The Solent. The third class will be for the increasingly popular Quarter Tonners, whose revival has been spearheaded by the Royal Corinthian.
The two big-boat classes will level race, retaining the “first past the post” format so popular with the competitors, while the Quarter Tonners will race under IRC. Upwards of 40 boats are expected to take part in this year’s competition.
Jerry Otter, owner of the Farr 45 Werewolf, sums up the appeal of the regatta perfectly: “I’d just like to thank the Royal Corinthian for what they’ve done with the Vice Admiral’s Cup event.
“I think bringing it through for the first time in 2005 when the Admiral’s Cup failed was a tremendous insight and I think the success we’ve seen not just that year when we were just two classes, but in 2006 in particular with the 40.7s and the Quarter Tonners, plus the great social programme shows it has real potential for the future.
“In my own personal opinion, level racing has to be the way forward. People want racing where they can see exactly how they are doing on the water.”
