IN front of a sizeable crowd and the Sky Sports cameras, the Wightlink Islanders enjoyed an emphatic 58-34 win over Reading Racers on Tuesday.
Seasoned fans and novices to the sport were treated to 15 heats of high-octane action, with the Islanders taking control of the match from heat five.
The previous night, the Islanders’ hopes of an away victory at Reading were cruelly shattered in the very last heat when Polish rider Kryzsztof Stojanowski not only failed by inches to snatch the second place that would have gained a deserved draw but crashed into the first bend airfence at the end of the race.
He suffered injuries to his shoulder which ruled him out of the return leg on Tuesday and will likely keep him on the sidelines for a fortnight.
The result in the end at Reading was 46-44.
But without Stojanowski, the Islanders were unfazed and made light work of Reading in front of the cameras.
In total the Islanders enjoyed six maximum points heats and only lost two, with Glen Phillips enjoying a points tally of 15+1, Paul Fry collecting 11+2 and Jason Bunyan registering 10+1.
Team manager Martin Newnham said: “We thought with Kryzsztof ruled out with injury, we might well be in for a tough meeting as Reading were among many people’s pre-season favourites to win this year’s title.“But we simply ripped them apart and perhaps fans up and down the country will begin to admit we here on the IW have a very good side indeed.”
This weekend the Islanders travel to Berwick and Glasgow for away league matches, before their home Premier League KO Cup tie against Sheffield at Smallbrook on Tuesday.
