Speedway: Wightlink Islanders v Berwick Bandits
Fry scorcher helps blast Bandits

Wednesday, July 23, 2008
WIGHTLINK Islanders’ unbeaten home run continues after a 53-40 win over Berwick Bandits last night (Tuesday).
Many had expected the Island speedway stars to be pushed to the limit, but the home side had other ideas, convincingly winning 53-40 at Smallbrook Stadium.
The Islanders were given a scare when Bandits’ Adrian Rymel scorched to victory in the opening heat, but they bounced back immediately through new signing Richard Sweetman, who stormed to victory in the second heat.
And with Kiwi Andrew Bargh claiming third place, the Islanders eased into a lead they were never to surrender, especially after heat six when James Holder and Jason Bunyan scored a one-two, followed by another maximum points win in the seventh.
Man of the match was Paul Fry, who at 43 years old is leading the charge for the Islanders this season and top scored with 12 points.
On Thursday, Smallbrook Stadium hosts the ninth Smallbrook Spectacular, raising money for the Speedway Riders’ Benevolent Fund.
The event has already raised more than £15,000 and this year there will be 34 races throughout the night, including a classic speedway team challenge, as well as sidecar races, 500cc races and mini bikes.
Among the speedway riders taking part are Wightlink Islanders’ Jason Bunyan, Krzysztof Stojanowski and newcomer Richard Sweetman, as well as Andy Bargh, Tomas Suchanek and Ryan Sedgeman.
The action begins at 7.30pm and tickets will be available on the gate.
