RIDERS AND SPECTATORS HURT IN SPEEDWAY SMASH

By County Press Sports Desk - Sunday, May 11, 2008
Wightlink Islanders' Paul Fry and Berwick Bandits' Scott Smith were injured last night (Saturday) when they crashed into a barrier gate at Berwick's home track.
And three spectators were also hurt when one of the bikes flew into the stands.
One sustained cuts and bruises while two others, both teenagers, were taken to hospital.
A 14-year-old girl was admitted with non-life threatening head injuries, while a 16-year-old boy required surgery on a broken collarbone and shoulder injuries.
Fry, who is reported to have been thrown 50ft by the crash, is expected to return to his native West Country and visit a local hospital today (Sunday) to have his injuries assessed. He is thought to have broken toes, sustained knee ligament damage and cuts and bruises.
Smith suffered superficial injuries and is not expected to require hospital treatment.
The crash happened in heat 7 of the meeting, which was immediately abandoned and will be rearranged for another date.
The two riders' machines locked together on a bend, with both men smashing through the safety fence. Smith's bike used fence debris as a ramp as it flew into the crowd.
At the time the Islanders were 19-17 up.
