SQUAD REVVED UP AND READY TO GO
By Bryn Williams -
Wednesday, March 12, 2008
PRACTICALLY all the 2008 Wightlink Islanders squad managed to beat the horrendous weather last night (Tuesday) and took to the Smallbrook circuit for the first time for a practice session.
The only absentee was skipper Jason Bunyan who is on his way back to Britain after spending the winter in New Zealand.
However, the remaining squad members looked good as they raced, and every single one of them was full of praise for the track, which has had plenty of TLC over the winter.
Southampton-based Glen Phillips, who will be combining his speedway duties for the Wightlink Islanders with an out-and-out assault on this year's World Longtrack title, said: "All credit to the track staff here, who it seems have worked tremendously hard and have seemingly eradicated every single bump around our 385m circuit.
"I've never known our track so smooth and I'm sure the racing here this season is going to be even faster than it's been in the past, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Chris Holder's track record beaten."
The season begins on Saturday, March 22, with a home match against Reading Racers.
