From Maureen Martin, Ryde:

The answer to Cllr Andrew Garratt’s question (CP, 16-02-18) about the poor response to the Ryde regeneration workshops is simple.

Lack of publicity and communication.

Awareness of the Ryde regeneration programme in general and the workshops in particular, is virtually non existent.

Posting a mention on Facebook is insufficient to inform the mixed-aged population of Ryde.

A few local residents discovered the first workshop just prior to commencement.

Despite leaving their e-mail addresses, they were not informed of the second, while others, such as the town council, were.

As for Mr Ashman’s comment some people thought the exercise futile, that is well founded.

There is a serious contradiction between the IW Council’s promotion of Ryde renewal with substantial funds available, and their programme of selling off Ryde’s assets to outside interests.

Still to come is the sale of Appley Tower, iconic, historic, beloved by all, unless a sustainable use can be found for it by Cllr Lilley and the Friends of Appley Tower within a nine-month grace period.

What better use of regeneration funds, and for sustainability, could there be than to bring valuable amenities like the Ryde Theatre and the ice rink back into the community?

The budget for the workshop/regeneration exercise alone, £2.3 million (CP, 16-02-18) would have gone a long way to accomplish this and create a first-class ice rink with space for other activities, for our award-winning skaters, the town and tourism.

When those few attending workshop two are asked to debate the best community use of empty buildings (among other controversial topics such as the use of green space) it is any wonder cynicism abounds?
