From Peter Gruner, Ryde:

From a distance the bizarre sight of a moving beach hut, commandeered by cyclists, gliding along Ryde Pier, seems perhaps like something out of a 1960s French farce.

But it has so delighted many of us who walk along the sea front that I felt inclined to comment.

The new BoRo Beach Bike proves that it is not grandiose regeneration that is needed to improve Ryde, but simple imagination and flair.

Even the bike’s station at the top of the pier has been colourfully decorated — in contrast to the surrounding semi dereliction which has been allowed to stagnate for so many years.

The bike not only wows the tourists — something that is rarely done by the authorities these days — but a team of volunteers are planning to cycle to nearby beaches to help with litter cleaning.

Well done to all involved.
