From Derek Newton, Binstead:
Something I’ve been left quite speechless by recently, and something in which I’m sure many readers will silently agree on, is the power of hand-dryers.
I went to Gunwharf Quays with my wife at the weekend and left astounded by the force at which one of their hand-dryers operated — it was imposing waves in the flesh of my hands as I moved them about.
This shocked me. Are they safe? I would imagine they are, but I have more questions than answers.
The best hand-dryer I’ve come across on the Island is at The Bargeman’s Rest in Newport: it has a timer that counts down from 15 seconds.
When it reaches zero my hands aren’t perfectly dry, yet by the time I return to my table I can still grip my cutlery with minimal slip.
I do wonder if this ‘tour de force’ will end when we leave the EU, who have needlessly limited the power of hoovers and washing machines in the past year or so.
If this is the case and our hand-dryers can match Gunwharf Quay’s in strength then I won’t be sad for our neighbours from the North Island.
