From David Williams, Newport:

I am shocked to see the huge amount of litter, dog mess and bush bats (plastic bags of dog poo hanging from branches) everywhere and all over the Island, including the beaches, and I wonder if we are heading towards becoming the most untidy and least-bothered county in the country?

I dread to think what visitors to the Island must think of what they see.

If we have concerns about hikes in council tax or that the council does not have enough money to adequately support social care, libraries, road maintenance and other important needs, then consider the unnecessary waste of money having to be spent cleaning up the mess made by idle and careless people. Money that could be much better spent elsewhere.

That said, there is a need for our council to provide more regularly emptied rubbish bins and dog poo bins, especially along and at the ends of town and country walks. Covert patrols to identify and fine offenders wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

Schools could also play their part by stressing the need for the children not to throw wrappers, cans and plastic bottles on the ground.

If each community took an interest in the cleanliness of its immediate neighborhood it would make a massive difference.

Equally, making the Island environment less of an eyesore generally could prevent a potentially negative impact on the tourist trade
