HUNDREDS of tonnes of clay, rock and trees slid down onto the beach at Widdick Chine, Totland, yesterday (Wednesday) in the latest of a string of landslips to occur on the Isle of Wight.

The landslip occurred just beyond the old lifeboat station at Widdick Chine where the coastal footpath steps come down to the beach.

Stuart Gould, 66, of Church Hill, Totland Bay, was on his morning stroll along the front when he noticed the landslip and took this photograph, which he shared with the County Press.

Mr Gould said: "Hundreds, if not thousands, of tons of clay, rock and trees have fallen down covering the beach which, even with the poor Easter weather, had families playing there on Monday.

"The houses at the top seem safe, but I suspect owners must be concerned.

"I have reported it to police who intended to contact the council."
