THE Spyglass Inn, Ventnor, has been named the Isle of Wight's best pub.

Pub and Bar Magazine has chosen its favourite pub from every county in the UK and shortlisted them for a national award.

Representatives from all 94 pubs have been invited to the grand final of the National Pub and Bar Awards in London next month, where 15 regional winners and one overall champion will be announced.

Spyglass manager Adam Edmunds said the pub's sea view and lively atmosphere, with live music almost every night and regular events, set it apart.

"We've just celebrated our 30th anniversary and we've built up a loyal following over that time. A lot of holidaymakers come back every year," he said.

Pub and Bar Magazine editor Tristan O'Hana said: "This positive news comes at a time when closures of pubs and bars are too often focused on in the press. The sole purpose of the awards is to tell as many people as possible about the incredible businesses these county winners are running. With 94 triumphant pubs on the winners list, chances are that every person in the UK will have an award-winning pub near them. Get out there and see these places for yourselves."
