NEWPORT showed that although they are down, they are not lacking fighting spirit by chalking up their seventh win of the Sydenhams Wessex Premier campaign, beating Bournemouth 2-1 at St Georges' Park this afternoon (Saturday).

For the Isle of Wight's other Premier side, Cowes Sports were involved in a seven-goal thriller at Brockenhurst.

It was a topsy-turvy match, which saw the Yachtsmen go 2-0 down inside the first 12 minutes.

But two goals from prolific striker, John McKie, and another from Connor White, put Cowes into the lead.

However, two further strikes by Brockenhurst saw them edge past Cowes 4-3, the final goal coming in the 79th minute.

In Division 1, East Cowes Vics lost 3-1 away at Fawley.

In the Island's match of the day, Whitecroft and Barton Sports beat Shanklin 3-1 in the semi-final of the Andy Butler Sports Ground Specialist Memorial Cup.

After a goalless first half at Shanklin's Recreation Ground, W&B had a man advantage just after the break after Shanklin's Phil McDonald was given a straight red card for a stamp on an opposing player.

Goals quickly followed for W&B through Ash Gulliver and two by Liam Slaven, with a late consolation by Ryan Hill for Shanklin.
