THOUSANDS took to coastal paths, cycle tracks, hills and fields across the Island yesterday (Sunday) to Walk the Wight for Mountbatten.

Walkers were blessed with glorious sunshine and blue skies from their 6am start to the close of day for the 26.5 mile walk from Bembridge to the Needles.

Among the sea of yellow Mountbatten tops were superheroes, the latest Marvel villain Thanos, fairies and butterflies, the Powerpuff girls, seaside characters and Hi-De-Hi workers.

Lots of walkers had a personal connection to Mountbatten, walking in memory of family and friends who had been cared for and looked after by the hospice, while some simply knew of the incredible work the staff do and spoke about what an integral resource the hospice is for the Island.

Some even ran the route — the famous ‘Godshill massive’ unmissable in their purple and yellow knee-high socks.

Many a canine companion, ranging from puppies to veteran Walk the Wighters, joined forces and enjoyed dog treats at the checkpoints.

Mountbatten posted on Facebook: “It’s time to reflect on a truly amazing and wonderful day with huge gratitude to everyone who has made Walk the Wight 2018 such a huge success. We salute you!”
