THREE items of treasure were found in the parish of Brighstone.

During an inquest at the beginning of the month, Frank Basford, the finds liaison officer for the IW Heritage Service, presented the three items.

A gold posy finger ring dating to the 17th century was found by Sharon Hawkes.

Mr Basford said the ring was a lover's gift.

"The outer face has an elaborate design of contiguous moulded motifs — hearts, tri-lobed floral sprigs and daggers," Mr Basford said.

"The inner face has a phrase as well as a maker's mark and is inscribed: 'Constancy Weth Affection' (constancy with affection). The inscription is followed by the maker's mark in the form of a stamped capital letter 'R'. 'Goldsmith R', thought to be active c.1682-1697."

A gold Anglo-Saxon boss dating to the 7th century was found by Steve Taylor.

Mr Basford said: "The design and style make it likely that this artefact is a detached decorative boss from a larger object, possibly a sword hilt or buckle. Similar examples are also found on the Sutton Hoo buckle."

A medieval silver annular brooch dating to the 14th century was found by Phil Cave.

Mr Basford said: "The brooch has eight 'brambled' hemispherical bosses."
