THE BLISTERING hot recent summer weather and difficult growing conditions did not stop members of Freshwater Horticultural Society staging a sumptuous summer show at The Memorial Hall in the village yesterday (Saturday).

The society was established in 1873 with its original president being Queen Victoria's favourite poet, Alfred Lord Tennyson with early shows said to have taken place at his home in Farringford.

Members of the society are celebrating their 125th annual show this year. The show did not take place in the years between the First and Second World War but was relaunched after 1945.

Among this year's show winners was Christine Plent, 74, from Colwell who won a rarely awarded gold medal certificate for her beautiful floral display.
