A LARGE fire has spread through the undergrowth off Sandown seafront this evening (Saturday).

Fire engines from Sandown, Shanklin and Newport, plus a command unit, have rushed to the scene, towards Dinosaur Isle, following multiple 999 calls shortly before 7.30pm.

An Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said a number of trees and bushes had caught alight as the fire started to spread, and there was a lot of smoke in the area.

UPDATED 21:15: The fire was extinguished shortly before 8.30pm.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, a spokesperson said a disused building, described as an old pumping station, was on fire.

The flames spread to the surrounding undergrowth, an area measuring ten by ten metres at the height of the blaze.

Two hose reels and one main jet were used to extinguish the fire.
