A YACHTSWOMAN with head and back injuries was airlifted to hospital today (Sunday), with the help of Isle of Wight rescuers.

The four person crew of the 35ft Blue Moon called the UK Coastguard for help after the 62-year-old woman suffered a laceration to her head and a back injury.

The Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat was despatched to help the rescue effort at 3.50pm, as the sea was too choppy for the coastguard helicopter to airlift the injured woman from the yacht.

It attended the scene, around 22 nautical miles off the south east of the Isle of Wight, and helped transfer the woman from the yacht to the lifeboat.

From there, she was winched to the safety of the helicopter and taken to hospital on the mainland.
