A POWERCUT has hit central and western parts of the Isle of Wight this morning.

The Isle of Wight Council has said that Brighstone Primary School is among those affected, leaving its IT system down.

It is currently liaising with Scottish and Southern Electric but remains open.

A spokeswoman for Scottish and Southern Electric said around 1,158 properties had been initially affected by the power cut which was being investigated by engineers.

Properties in parts of Newport, Calbourne and Shorwell had been affected and work so far had reduced the numbers to 386 currently without power.

They hoped to have power restored this morning.
