ISLE of Wight rescue crews have been called to Shanklin this morning, following reports a man needed help.

Bembridge and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Teams were called to the scene, in the area of Rylstone Gardens, at around 9.20am.

Police officers are also in attendance.

A UK Coastguard spokesperson said concerns had been raised for the man's safety.

UPDATED 14:09: Following a search of the area, a coastguard spokesperson said rescue crews had been stood down as the man had not been located.

A police spokesperson said a member of the public had found a note in the area, which gave rise to concerns about the writer's welfare, but no-one had been found.

Enquiries are continuing.
