BRINGING together family, friends and colleagues in the battle against cancer, the Relay for Life event saw hundreds walk, dance and run the Smallbrook Stadium track for Cancer Research UK last weekend.

As a festival atmosphere filled the stadium when Isle of Wight Wightlink Warriors and Wizards riders revved the opening lap, teams that included survivors, supporters, pets and kids in buggies prepared for the 24-hour relay walk.

Dawn West, events manager and media coordinator, said: "The most poignant moment for the committee was when Voices of the Isle of Wight performed on stage. Everyone gathered around the stage and brought tears to our eyes.

"They led us into the Candle of Hope ceremony where there were candles and personal messages for loved ones. It was a wonderful time to reflect."

After a survivors lap of honour, a fantastic line up of Isle of Wight musicians, including a lap of the track from Raw Samba, kept the walkers going.

At night, Hush Silent Disco Company provided headsets to keep the music and party vibe going as the walkers powered through the night.

Dawn said: "An absolute must mention is Kim Pulinger. She walked 53.5 miles, took 115143 steps and kept going for nearly 18 and a half hours.

"That's more than two Walk the Wights. We were absolutely astounded at her strength."

All the money raised, which goes to Southampton general and oncology unit where Islanders are treated, will be collected by October 1 when a final tally will be announced.
