HAVING her debit card declined after trying to pay for food at a takeaway led to a court appearance for an Isle of Wight woman.

Rebecca Attrill, 21, of St John's Road, Ryde, admitted using threatening or abusive insulting words or behaviour against staff at the Charcol Grill in Union Street and causing £95 worth of criminal damage to a glass door panel, when she appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Friday.

The court was told Attrill went into the takeaway at around 11.40pm on March 10 and told staff she only had £3.40 on her debit card.

She was told she could have some cheesy chips but when she came to pay for her food, her card was declined.

She then became aggressive and abusive, screwed up a menu and threw it at a staff member.

She then took two 'hard and determined kicks' at a display fridge, said Vivian Ducie prosecuting.

Staff tried to deter her by throwing a small plastic drinks bottle at her.

For Attrill, Barry Arnett, said his client had been dealing, effectively, with a drink addiction at the time of the offence and had self-referred to services which could help her, but there had been a waiting list.

He added Attrill overreacted when her card was declined.

Attrill was given a 12-month conditional discharge and told to pay £95 compensation.

She was also told to pay £85 costs and a surcharge of £20.
