A WOMAN has been taken to hospital after her car veered off the side of Belgrave Road in Ventnor this evening (Tuesday).

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene just before 9pm to assist in removing the driver from the vehicle, which had fallen off Belgrave Road and into the trees below.

One engine from Ventnor, one engine from Shanklin, one engine from Newport and Newport's rescue support vehicle were at the scene.

She was then placed in the care of the Ambulance Service who were called at 9.05pm.

Two front line ambulances and one off-duty officer attended the scene and the driver has been coveyed to the Emergency Department at St. Mary's Hospital.

Police are also at the scene and have cordoned off the road.

UPDATED WEDNESDAY 09:17: The Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team (CRT) shared these pictures of the rescue on Twitter.

The team posted: "Tasked with assistance from our colleagues at Bembridge CRT to a car that had gone through some railings in Ventnor and fallen some distance over the cliff. Assistance provided to police, fire and ambulance with casualty. #teamwork." 

UPDATED WEDNESDAY 09:52: A recovery vehicle from Stag Lane Motors has arrived to recover the vehicle.
