TURNING up at the mother of his young son's home while drunk, and making her believe she was going to be assaulted, landed a Freshwater man in court.

Aaron Terrance Ford, 29, of Longhalves Lane, admitted a charge of common assault when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Monday (October 8).

The court heard the woman, who had been seeing Ford for around four years but was now in an 'on-off' relationship with him, was at home and their son was asleep inside.

She asked him to leave but he threatened her, causing her to believe she would be assaulted, said Ann Smout prosecuting.

There was no physical contact but she was afraid there would be, said Mrs Smout.

Ford told police he was so drunk he could not remember the incident.

He said he had suffered with mental health and alcohol problems from a young age.

The court heard he had drunk cider on the day of the incident and later woken up in a police cell — with no memory of what had happened.

For Ford, Barry Arnett said it was his client's mother that had called the police.

His family was concerned about his mental development, said Mr Arnett.

He said: "He has cut back on his drinking but alcohol clearly played a part."

The case was adjourned for sentencing until October 29.

Ford was granted unconditional bail.
