IT IS often difficult for disabled children to access public soft play areas — so Beaulieu House now has its own.

Thanks to the charity arm, Beaulieu Respite, and several local businesses, events and organisations, the new play area was officially opened on Sunday (14).

Cutting the ribbon was Cllr Paul Brading, IW Council cabinet member for children's services, education and skills, who has supported the project.

The £60,000 scheme was built for £40,000 thanks to Sydenhams donating the timber frame, Chris and Adam Ridett of Arid Architects doing the design and planning application for free, and David Norville and Tim Blackman of DN Associates building it at cost price.

The £40,000 cost was all donated, thanks to Sporting Bears giving dream rides at the Garlic Festival, The Gibbs Family donating proceeds of the Sweetcorn Fayre, and the Butterfly and Bee fundraising cyclists who rode from St Thomas' Square in Newport, to Nice.

Tony Wake, chairman of Beaulieu Respite, said: "The kids absolutely love it and the official opening was a good chance to say thank you to those who raised the money."

Beaulieu House, in Newport, is a home for disabled children and also offers respite stays.
