The new Citaro buses, which will soon be joining the Southern Vectis fleet.

SOUTHERN Vectis has announced a £1 million investment in the latest single-deck coach-style buses for its Ryde-Newport service.

The seven Mercedes Benz Citaro single-deck easy-access buses are expected to be delivered during May to upgrade the high-frequency service between Ryde and Newport. Services are being increased from April 1.

Southern Vectis operations and commercial manager Marc Morgan Huws said: “The 39-seat Citaros not only offer coach style and comfort, complete with air-conditioning, but are Euro 5 compliant for vehicle emissions, the standard set for implementation in 2009.

"No expense will be spared to provide the best vehicles for the enhanced Ryde-to-Newport service.

“At 12 metres long, they are the first full-size single-deck buses to be brought to the Island since 1976 and will increase the number of low-floor buses for the services on the Island from 24 to 31.

“Citaros have already proved popular with bus users at our Go-Ahead Group sister companies in Southampton, Poole, Salisbury and Oxford.”
