BOSSES of the Isle of Wight's new Asda store have been left embarrassed by a spelling howler.
A total of 10,000 so-called Bags for Life will now have to be re-printed because “Wight” was spelled “White.”
The company joined a long list of national organisations which have made the schoolboy error over the years.
The special bags were designed by two Island schoolchildren to mark the opening of the Newport store on Monday.
The costly mistake came after seven years and a £40 million investment — and the miss-spelling evaded checks by the advertising agency, printer and Asda staff, the bags even making it to the check-outs before being withdrawn.
In a statement Asda said it was “hanging its collective head” and promised a re-print.
The design reflected key Island landmarks and what the children liked best.
The winning entry was chosen from over 300 and was created by brothers Ciaran, ten, and eight-year-old Ryan Peterson.
“Isle of White” was not their work, it was added later by Asda.
