March 20, 2001 9:10: RESIDENTS of a Petts Wood street blighted by dog mess are demanding owners take responsibility for their pets.

Doreen Eadie, 66, who owns a dog herself, is determined the chronic problem affecting Chesham Avenue must stop.

She said: "It's absolutely awful. We keep clearing up all the mess but then it comes back again. We're tired of it and just want the owners to be taken to task."

She fears small children who play in the street are at risk from the faeces, which can cause blindness if it gets in people's eyes.

Despite never catching one of the dogs in the act, she is quite sure only one animal is responsible for the mess after carrying out her own detective work.

Bromley Council has put signs up round the area reminding dog-walkers to clear up after their animals.

Owners who let their dogs defecate on pavements face prosecution and can be fined up to £2,000.
