BENEDICTINE beer has scooped a top award for an Isle of Wight brewery.
Quarr Abbey Ale has been awarded the British Bottlers’ Institute diploma in the best strong ale category of this year’s competition.
The BBI said: “This year was another difficult competition for the judges to score with the quality of all entrants being so high.”
The speciality beer, brewed in the Benedictine style, is described as “a strong full-bodied ale with an amber colour and complex palate with a strength of 6.5 per cent.”
Quarr Abbey was first founded in 1132 with the ethos of the monks sustaining themselves with produce and sharing it with the local community.
Quarr Abbey Ale is brewed to capture the essence of traditional abbey beers — and uses coriander and sweet gale grown in the abbey’s own gardens.
Goddards will be presented with its medal and certificate at the annual BBI dinner on November 9 in London.
