THE Isle of Wight's first ever Cancer Research Relay for Life is taking place this weekend with nearly 100 people walking for 24 hours around Smallbrook Stadium.
The event, which is raising funds and awareness, began at 12 noon today (Saturday) and will finish tomorrow at the same time.
Some walkers are in for the long haul and will not be leaving the stadium until the 24 hours is up.
Ten teams have entered the event with a total of around 90 people taking part, including many cancer survivors.
There is music on in the stadium until midnight tonight and starting up again at 6am tomorrow.
Throughout the night there will be a silent disco for the walkers.
Stuart Amey, the local fundraising manager with Cancer Research UK, said: "I have been to a few Relay for Life events around the country and they are all slightly different.
"This is not like any other I have seen. It is almost like a music festival with a relay going on at the same time.
"The committee have worked so hard to organise this event."
Every penny raised will go to Cancer Research and will be channeled into the oncology unit in Southampton where Islanders receive cancer treatment.
