David Tombleson, retired head of engineering at the Isle of Wight College, and his wife, Iris, were shocked to discover the chicken they bought from Lidl in Newport still contained its gizzard, complete with pellets of food inside.
The Blackwater couple also complained of a horrible bleach smell when they tried to cook it for their Sunday lunch.
Mr Tombleson took the chicken back to the shop but was unhappy with the response, saying that all the birds from the batch should have been taken off the shelves.
A Lidl spokesman told the County Press: "We were very sorry to hear of this matter and can confirm that our quality assurance team are investigating with the supplier.
"We only ever work with reputable accredited suppliers who have strict controls and procedures in place to ensure that our products meet the high standards demanded by us and by our customers.
"We are, therefore very disappointed that the expected high standards have not been met on this occasion and will update the customer on our findings."
