THIS year’s Young Enterprise saw seven teams from Isle of Wight schools and colleges competing to secure funding in a Dragons’ Den-style event.
Each of the teams were successful, with pupils from Sandown Bay Academy, Ryde School and two teams from Christ the King College being awarded the £60 grant to invest in their business idea.
Ryde Academy’s Multi-Ply, Innovation VI Form Campus’s Silverline Enterprises and St Catherine’s JAPMEC were granted additional funds for their projects.
The dragons were Jamie Busby, partner of Hose Rhodes Dickson, Hannah Lisseter, of Glanvilles, Sue Lucas, senior partner at Moore Stephens Account-ants, and Sue Edwards, owner of Doris Pinks Florists.
Mr Busby said: "All the teams put in great pitches and we invested in all the business opportunities.
"It was very difficult to decide on the winners of the event."
Since the event, the teams have taken part in their spring trade fair, hosted by Tesco Extra in Ryde.
Each team had the opportunity to sell the products to shoppers with Ryde School achieving the highest turn-over of £114 by selling Island-themed wooden keyrings.
Christ the King’s team, Island Occasions, sold engraved glasses worth £42, while Silverline Enterprises, of Island Innovation VI Form Campus, produced a range of clocks made from vinyl records, achieving sales worth £105.
The finals night for Young Enterprise takes place at Quay Arts on April 27, with the winning team going on to represent the IW at the Hampshire finals in Southampton.
