Want to help? Please leave me alone

Baby creatures such as ducklings are best left in the wild

EVERY spring, the RSPCA is contacted by people who find what they think is an abandoned or orphaned young bird or animal.

In most cases, these youngsters have not been abandoned. 'Rescuing’ them may do more harm than good. Their mother is usually close by and looking out for them — human interference can reduce a young animal’s chance of survival.

If you find a young bird out of its nest, it is probably a fledgling. Fledglings of garden birds usually leave the nest around two weeks after hatching, just before they can fly. Fledglings are fed on the ground by their mothers, who are rarely far away, encouraging them to stay in cover. Young animals which are in immediate danger from predators or traffic should be placed out of harm, a short distance away.

If you think a bird is genuinely orphaned or has no feathers, take it your nearest veterinary surgery or bring it in to the RSPCA at Godshill.

It is not uncommon for young fox cubs to be seen outside their earth. Parent foxes are usually nearby and although the cubs may look vulnerable, intervention would probably do more harm than good.

If you find a fox cub which is obviously sick, injured or distressed contact the RSPCA on 03001234999 for advice.

In an emergency, take the cub to your nearest veterinary surgery or bring it in to the RSPCA at Godshill. Make a note of exactly where you found it. If you see a young hedgehog out during the day, it may be unwell or in trouble, in which case you should contact the RSPCA or bring it in to Godshill.

Remember, no matter how hard you try, you cannot look after a young animal as well as its parents. If you do find a baby bird or animal on its own, and you want to help, LEAVE IT ALONE. If you are worried come back later and check to see if all is well.
