OUTSTANDING?Island athletes and those who have gone above and beyond were recognised at an awards event last Friday.
The IW Athletics Club (IWAC) celebrated the achievements of their members, with awards presented to competitors and people behind the scenes.
Charlie Button won the club’s athlete of the year award after a memorable season, which included firsts at the Hampshire championships and schools’ championships.
Siblings Maisie and Isaac Kent won the Derek Frost Trophy, in recognition of their determination and commitment to athletics.
Despite having hyperinsulinaemic hypoglycaemia, a condition where their bodies produce too much insulin when they eat, causing their blood sugar levels to drop, the pair overcome daily challenges to compete.
Coach Ray Scovell won the spirit of the club award for his loyalty over 25 years and Tracy Haggerty and Ellie Witty won the volunteers of the year award.
Brian Canning and Rob Witty were named officials of the year.
The club’s team achievements were also recognised.
Scovell, pictured, right, with Maisie and Isaac Kent, said: "What quality and awesome children we have, it was a pleasure to host the event.
"We have such focused young athletes and the key word is fun, they all enjoy the experience and camaraderie of IWAC.
"They all do the club very proud."
