£40,000 prize in climate contest

By Ross Findon - Monday, July 26, 2010
SMALL Island businesses with innovative ideas about tackling climate change have been invited to enter a competition with a top prize of £40,000.
The Shell Springboard Programme is aimed at small businesses working to reduce greenhouse gasses through commercially viable and innovative measures.
Last year’s winner was Aeristech, a company that developed a system allowing car companies to reduce emissions and costs, without reducing performance.
Founder of the company Bryn Richards, who spoke as this year’s search for a winner began, said: "Winning Shell Spingboard was a big help. It enhanced our brand and helped us build momentum.
"It was also an excellent opportunity for peer review of our technology and business model.
"I would urge anyone out there with a good idea for tacking the climate challenge to enter."
Shell UK chairman James Smith said: "Small businesses are a prolific reservoir of creative thinking on low-carbon technologies.
"Shell Springboard offers no strings financial awards to help these businesses get their ideas off the ground."
Last year the competition made nine awards, ranging from £20 to 40,000, to companies. The deadline for entries is November 5 and forms can be downloaded from www.shellspringboard.org.
