THE Co-op at Freshwater is an example to retailers across the country.Southern Co-operative won a national Community Retailer of the Year award and gave the Hooke Hill store as its best example of a shop’s commitment.The store has raised more than £40,000 for good causes in the past year through its community support card scheme.The company makes a donation to the chosen cause — West Wight Sports Centre, West Wight Football Club under-nines and the Abbeyfield West Wight Society have all benefited — every time customers use their cards in store.Staff at the store also volunteer to raise funds for a number of Island causes.The Southern Co-operative received the award at a ceremony, held at the Park Plaza Hotel, Westminster.Reporter: mattw@iwcpmail.co.uk
