SEASONED actor and TV presenter Tony Robinson has underlined the importance of apprenticeships with the help of two young Islanders.
He was the celebrity guest at Celebrating Apprenticeships Through the Ages at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, where he met Island apprentices John Williams, 17, and Lucy Johnson, 18, as part of National Apprenticeships Week 2010.
John is a new station administrator apprentice working for IW Radio, while Lucy works for the IW Council as a business administration apprentice to the directors’ team.
They were joined at the event by apprentices representing every decade from 1945 to 2010.
The dockyard was chosen as a venue because it has a long history of apprenticeships, and guests were free to visit the Dockyard Apprentice of 1911 exhibition.
Tony Robinson gave a talk about the long history of apprenticeships, started by the ancient Egyptians, who used apprentices to help build the pyramids.
