ENGINEERS at Island Telecom Group (ITG) have been busy travelling around the world to upgrade telecommunication systems on cruise ships.
The Newport-based company sent engineers to Southampton in early April to install a system designed to alert people of a fire on board on the P&O cruise liner Oriana.
InTeGrate is unique to P&O liners and links the telecommunication and fire detection systems, automatically sending a ring tone to cabin telephones as a fire warning message.
"We are particularly proud to have installed InTeGrate, which is a piece of equipment we have been developing for some time now," said managing director of ITG, Bob Stewart.
Another InTeGrate system was installed on P&O’s Ocean Village liner in Italy in May.
And three engineers spent eight days in Panama, replacing a telephone system on the Pullmantur Cruises ship, Pacific Dream.
The equipment was packed into a crate and sent by container ship to Panama, where it was installed by Jamie Stewart, Mark Durham and Steve Henstock, despite the Pacific Dream arriving in the country two days late.
"The delay meant the guys were working to a very tight deadline but they showed great dedication to complete it on time," said Mr Stewart.
Another trip to Italy was made by Jamie at the end of May after a major fault occurred on the Pullmantur Cruises ship, Bleu de France. At the same time, the company moved to its new offices at Dodnor Lane.
It has also been awarded a contract to fit another InTeGrate system on the P&O Pacific Dream cruise ship in Australia, in September.
