In touch with people’s needs

TECHNOLOGY which could help people around the world has been developed by an Island entreprenuer.

Touchless Tech, a unique switching system aimed at anyone who has limited movement and dexterity, has been created by Paul Berkeley.

Engineer Mr Berkeley invented the technology originally after a request from his wife, Susan, who wanted an easier way to turn on a bedside light without knocking everything off the bedside table.

That simple request led to an ingenious solution, using motion and heat sensing technology.

The technology has now been developed to include a range of other products using the same switching technology to activate almost any appliance.

Mr Berkeley has recently worked with the Medical Engineering Research Unit, which works with the Children’s Trust, to develop a bedside version for disabled children.

"The technology means that even someone who is only able to move one finger can switch it on and off," he said.

Lake company Culver Electronics won the contract to produce the first switches, while Ability World has been appointed as the national distributor.

Mr Berkeley said he was now looking for investors to help expand the business.

He can be contacted via e-mail at paul@sabreswitch.co.uk.
