NEWPORT communication firm ITG has landed a five-year contract with US firm Equivoice, to install and maintain payphones and card dispensers on more than 100 cruise ships.

The ships operate across Europe and include vessels from the P&O, Carnival, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Cunard fleets.

Each time a ship returns to Southampton, an ITG engineer will be on board to carry out work, leading to plans to open a Southampton office later this year.

The company also has the contract for installing telecommunications at the new IW College sixth form and its engineers have worked on projects around the world, including Singapore and Australia.

"It is very nice to have all this global work on the cruise ships but I do not lose sight of the fact we are totally committed to the Island community in which we operate," said managing director Bob Stewart.
