BUSINESSES can back a conservation effort to protect Island red squirrels, thanks to a new merchandise package.

Wight Squirrel Project and W. J. Nigh and Sons have collaborated to create a package of gift items that can be sold in aid of the charity.

"Although I have been providing goods through W. J. Nigh and Sons, I hadn’t known which businesses were taking them, so I found it hard to direct people where they could go to buy them," said Helen Butler, project co-ordinator.

Thanks to the new package, the charity will be able to better co-ordinate its work with IW businesses that support the cause, said Mrs Butler.

Terry Nigh, of Nigh and Sons, said: "We are very pleased to support the efforts of the Wight Squirrel Project and wish continued success in looking after the little creatures, who have become the Island’s animal mascots."
