One of Stanmore's most famous employers is to disappear.

GEC Marconi, which has a factory in Warren Lane, is to be renamed.

The electronics and defence specialists will simply called Marconi under a plan being considered by its parent company's management.

GEC, which reports 1997 to 1998 results today (Thursday), with pre-tax profits of about £1.05 billion expected, is canvassing investors about the potential change of identity.

Staff at the company's Stanmore site celebrated the profit results on Saturday with a fun day at which a Euro-fighter aircraft containing hi-tech equipment made by the company was the star attraction.
