I am just writing to say how pleased I am that at last someone is taking the problem of litter seriously ( 'Litterbugs targeted by GLA's clean-up project' Times, January 3).

Our city is being destroyed by a tide of filth that is making day-to-day life far more unpleasant than it needs to be. The fact that a tonne of litter is dropped every minute is truly shocking. My only concern is that the campaign is being aimed solely at youngsters.

Of course, they are offenders but they are not the only ones. People must be shamed into stopping littering and, if that doesn't work, they must be punished.

I remember when many, many people used to drink and drive but a concerted effort to make them see sense, combined with strict legal penalties has brought that problem under control.
