CRICKET

NEWPORT cricketer Kev Winchcombe was an interval star at this week’s One Day International between England and South Africa at the Ageas Bowl, Hampshire.

He and 11 other cricket coaches from around the country were presented with certificates from the Sky Sports ECB Coach Education Programme’s reward and recognition scheme, by former England cricketer Nick Knight, during the game.

More than 100 coaches from have been recognised during this season, all of whom have been voted to receive the reward by their county’s fellow coaches for their dedication to the game.

Kevin has been coaching for nearly 20 years and in that time has achieved his Level 3 coaching certificate. He currently coaches Newport’s under-17s but in the past has coached all age groups.

He said: "As a direct result of this programme there are now more coaches at my club and therefore an increased number of children are receiving good quality coaching. Since I began coaching, many youngsters have now progressed into our club’s first team, which is brilliant."
