CRICKET: OVER-45s LEAGUETHERE was an exciting and competitive start for the Harwoods Over-45s Indoor Cricket League at the Fairway Sports Complex last weekend.
Last year’s winners Bandits started their title defence against a strong-looking Fighting Cocks side.
However, batting first, Fighting Cocks found themselves 16-4 after only two overs. Ronnie Denness came to the rescue with an excellent 40 to push the score to 78 all out.
Bandits weren’t in any real trouble but took over ten overs to get the required total with three wickets down. Paul Biddlecombe top scored with 27 not out.
The closest match saw Warriors hit an impressive 128-3 (Mike Watson 27 not out, Scott Wright 33 not out, Pete Holdcroft 25 not out), with Steve Priddle (2-28) the pick of the bowlers for Majors.
Majors’ reply, led by Tony Cook’s 27 not out, and Trevor Spence (39 not out) got the side to within four runs with one ball left, only to get run out.
Tweakers had Dominic Hillyard (46), Dave Tolfrey (26 not out), and Richard Christensen (27 not out) to thank as they helped rack up a huge total of 145-3 against Hurricanes, and were the first team to get a batting point.
Tony Higgins (2-40) was the only bowler to get some success.
The reply by Hurricanes was going well, with Simon Bligh hitting 26 but too many wickets fell in the middle order, leaving Richard Turner (48) to build on the score, as Hurricanes were bowled out for 99.
Hillyard completed a good all round performance with 2-25.
