CRICKETSPIN bowler Danny Briggs gave Island cricket fans a reason to cheer this week, as he led England to a resounding win in the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.
Briggs, 18, of Ryde, earned the man of the match award as he returned figures of 3-15 against Afghanistan.
England skittled the lowly side for 126 in their group match, the win enough to book them a place in the quarter-finals of the competition ahead of their final group game against tournament favourites India, which was played yesterday (Thursday).
Afghanistan’s top order was taken out by Leicestershire’s Nathan Buck (3-18), and skipper Azeem Rafiq ( 2-29).
But Briggs was the man to finish the job when, as Afghanistan were reeling at 79-6, he took the next three wickets and then ran out the final batsman in the 48th over.
In England’s first group match, a win against Hong Kong, Briggs was the only bowler to complete his ten-over spell, recording a tidy 0-34.
