Briggs makes England start

CRICKETER Danny Briggs has taken his first international wickets this afternoon (Tuesday), after officially becoming the first IW player to earn a full England cap.

The young spinner, 20, who learned his skills at Ventnor and now is a star player for Hampshire, patiently waited until his eighth over to capture the scalp of Umar Akmal for 12, as he was caught by Dernbach. 

He then caught Shoaib Malik lbw for 23 as Pakistan reached 202-5 off 43.3 overs.

He finished with 2-39 off his permitted ten overs.

Briggs was named in this morning's starting XI in England's fourth one-day international against Pakistan in Dubai.

His name featured in a much-changed bowling attack alongside Samit Patel, Jade Dernbach, Steven Finn and Tim Bresnan.

The wickets cap a great couple of days for the star, who was voted sportsman of the year at The News Sports Awards at Fratton Park.

Fellow Islander and Hampshire cricketer David Griffiths collected the award on his behalf.
